Laboratory Assistant – Molecular Biology, DNA/ RNA

Location: Office based in County Durham

The Requirements of the Laboratory Assistant:

  • To be considered for the Laboratory Assistant role you must have a bachelor’s degree in a Molecular Biology or Biological focused degree (a scientific MSc degree or above would be desirable)
  • Must have laboratory experience in DNA/ RNA specifically; it would be desirable if you have experience working with the following laboratory techniques: Nucleic acid amplification, NGS sequencing, Microscopy (including fluorescent), Western blotting, Cell line maintenance, Cloning, Transfection and Immunocytochemistry
  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment as a Lab Assistant, Lab Technician, or similar support role – you could also be a recent graduate with strong DNA/RNA laboratory experience and have experience in the maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments (pH meters, PCR machines, etc.)
  • Knowledge of SHE requirements in a laboratory environment
  • Good time management skills, ability to be flexible and handle multiple responsibilities and tasks on a regular basis

The Role of the Laboratory Assistant:

  • The current COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that the world is ill equipped to monitor and track the evolution of emergent pathogens, and we fail to be proactive in the management of outbreaks. Our client is 18 months into a 5-year contract for the development of a mobile pathogen detection system, to detect biological threats, such as COVID-19
  • The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for carrying out all scientific support activities in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines, GLS & local agreements – with a focus on using DNA/ RNA techniques, and others associated with Molecular Biology such as ELISA, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis and Western Blotting
  • You will be responsible for the day to day running of the laboratory and maintenance of instruments
  • Proactively deliver the operational laboratory support, managing workload and service levels as required by the research group(s)
  • Management of glassware within the research labs
  • Daily replenishment of laboratory consumables, solvents and media. Also working with Materials Management to ensure inventories suit customer requirements
  • Ordering chemicals from a variety of suppliers
  • Support laboratory waste management streams including solvent/chemical waste, sharps and Winchesters for recycling in line with environmental regulations
  • Ownership of Reagent Management system involving receiving deliveries, returns and disposals
  • Monitor and keep communal areas clean and tidy
