Trainee Engineer – Life Sciences and Laboratory Supplies – Cambridge, UK

The requirements of the Trainee Engineer:

  • As the Trainee Field Engineer you will be educated with an HNC, HND or a minimum of a BSc in a Life Sciences/Chemistry discipline or an ONC/HNC in an engineering discipline
  • You will ideally have experience (1-2 years minimum) of Servicing, Calibrating and Maintaining any analytical instruments/ equipment or working within a Laboratory environment in areas such as: Biological machines, Laboratory Equipment, Microbiology equipment or Chemistry/ other analytical equipment
  • Must hold a Full UK driving license
  • You will need to be able to show an aptitude for service and operation of this type of equipment, however full training will be given within this service engineer role
  • Experience of effective verbal communication skills, with excellent telephone manner

The role of Trainee Engineer:

  • This role will initially be based at the companies Cambridge repair site, where you will provide maintenance, calibrations, fault finding, repairs and testing on a wide range of hand-held and desktop instruments. The training will primarily be provided by existing Engineering/ Technician staff and in the field at customer premises (work shadowing)
  • This individual will be expected to create and maintain equipment instruction sheets covering the verification and calibration of desktop equipment
  • Once trained to an adequate level, the person will take on primary responsibility for a range of customer sites across the country and it is envisaged that you could be in the field 1-3 days per week with the remainder at Cambridge (some weeks you could be based on site in Cambridge from Monday to Friday with no travel). This may include travelling long distances at short notice and require overnight stays away from home (again not every week, but this would be part of the role)
  • The person must have a “can do attitude” and be able and willing to attend customer sites, solving problems and issues with any products
  • Carry out the works in a timely manner in order to meet the turnaround times as dictated by the business objectives
  • Work with the service coordinator to develop controlled equipment instruction sheets (EIS) covering the verification / calibration process for all instruments
  • Provide telephone /technical support to customers and basic product training as and when required
