Lead Automation Scientist

Salary: Basic is negotiable DOE + Bonus + Healthcare (through vitality) + Pension (up to 5% matched) + Secure Car Parking + 28 days Holiday (plus stats)

Based: Manchester, UK

The Requirements:

  • Must have 5 – 10 years of laboratory experience within an industrial setting, of which 5+ years spent in an Automation Scientist, Automation Engineer, Automation Specialist role or equivalent – Must have Scripting, Software Integration/ IT experience related to the Automated/ Robotic machines
  • Experience with a range of automated liquid handlers, plate readers, automation software and equipment by manufacturers such as Tecan, TTP Labtech, PerkinElmer, Beckman Coulter, Hamilton, Agilent etc. Experience with Tecan liquid handlers, in particular the EVO series, is desirable
  • Experience with automation system architectures including internal and external interfacing of components and storage of configuration and live operational data, as well as Software programming skills for robotic operation, definition of graphical user interfaces and database access
  • Working knowledge of GLP, as well as instrument qualification and validation as well as the ability to analyse scientific workflows and recommend changes to improve scientific processes (ideally you will have experience in FTE Planning, Resourcing)
  • Good grasp of experimental design and execution, Supervisory experience of junior staff would be desirable

The Responsibilities:

  • You will be leading the design, development and verification of automated systems for product development, services and manufacturing
  • Provide automation leadership and expertise on projects, ensuring work is well planned and executed to a high quality in a timely fashion. Plays a key role in defining automation strategy for the company, provide technical leadership on projects
  • Identify commercially and technically appropriate automated solutions
  • Design and optimise automation workflows to ensure they are compatible with test reagents and meet scientific and user needs, in addition to usability requirements

In collaboration with the Software Development function, design and optimise flexible automation system architectures which:

  • Enable efficient storage and retrieval of workflow configuration and live operational data, and allow interfaces to be established both between automation instruments and to integrate effectively with external systems (e.g. LIMS)
  • Ensure correct data transfer and traceability between automation platforms and LIMS systems
  • Scientific input into study design and data interpretation, in particular to analyse, understand and control the variation in automated processes
  • Ensure own work and that of junior staff meets all relevant regulatory & quality requirements (including compliance to SOPs, documentation using lab books, study plans, study reports and integrity of data) and is in line with company goals
  • Support and provide guidance to junior staff, train other team members and customers in the use of laboratory automation systems
